Capoeira:

A martial art developed in secret by African slaves in Brazil

Born to the rhythm of drums, Capoeira is an art of deception, wits, agility, and resourcefulness – a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Legend has it that it was developed in secret on the sugar plantations of Brazil. In brief moments of respite from hard labor, or hidden in the tall stands of cane, the slaves would gather to revive memories of their homeland in music and dance – and kindle sparks of hope through the practice of fighting techniques.

Today Capoeira continues to be a syncretic art form combining elements of dance, acrobatics, theatre, music and effective fighting techniques. It has been formally recognized as a Brazilian national treasure and has come to be practiced all over the world.

Contra-Mestre Fabio has been practicing Capoeira for over 15 years and has recently arrived from Brazil to teach Capoeira here in the United States. He has studied the art with numerous world renowned masters, and has taught Capoeira to children and adults of all ages.

The aim of his classes is to develop physical abilities, such as flexibility, stamina, and strength, as well as an awareness of the limits of ones own body and the bodies of others through partner training. Students will also be exposed to Brazilian culture and history through interpreting traditions, learning Portuguese words and phrases, and practicing musical instruments and songs unique to Capoeira.
