About CM Espaço
Mestrando Espaço is a Brazilian Capoeirista, Dancer, and Mover now based in Humboldt County. His mission is to share his love of movement and Capoeira, practices that transmit the potential for self-mastery, transformation, healing, and a playful way of living. His approach prioritizes flow and a practice of active listening, connecting in a spirit of collaboration with partner, self, music, and the whole.
The way that he sees the game is not about winning, but about collaborating to create a momentary, spontaneous, inspiring, and unique piece of art created by the magic of the encounter between the two players.
Espaço has dedicated his life to the art of Capoeira ever since he discovered the practice at 18 years old in his hometown of São Paulo, Brazil. After a few years of intensive training, he began teaching Capoeira to adults and youth at a number of schools, assisting his Mestre, and choreographing and performing with his Capoeira group for cultural folkloric events, television, and Carnevale.
He departed from Brazil in 2006 to cycle for almost two years, crossing ten countries and pedaling over 12,000 miles to Petaluma, California with the purpose of studying and teaching at Capoeira schools all along the journey. Since arriving in the U.S., he taught Capoeira to children and adults throughout the Bay Area, and formed his own school in Petaluma where he has created a Capoeira community since 2008. He is now based in Humboldt County, where he is starting a new program for kids and adults.
Central to Espaço's approach to Capoeira is awareness of oneself in partnership with others and within the group dynamic. Besides building strength, flexibility, and full body awareness, it also teaches how to be responsive in the moment and aware of one’s emotions within the excitement and heightened stimulus of the roda.
Some would identify Contramestre Espaço as a big kid because of the ease and immediacy with which he connects with them. He loves working with kids because they are so present in the moment, rich with curiosity and the ability to see the world from a fresh perspective. Through his twenty two years of teaching kids, he has developed the sensitivity to keep the group dynamic flowing while simultaneously providing what each child needs for their individual development.
Besides being a Capoeirista, Espaço also identifies as a mover, dancer, and acrobat. In his programs, he always includes elements of circus- tumbling, juggling, etc.- that he feels help students develop body-mind connectivity. He also teaches movement classes outside of his Capoeira group to the general public, incorporating elements of dance, acrobatics, primal movement, and partner flow. He loves exploring and sharing movement in nature- climbing trees, rocks, and practicing different dynamics of flow in collaboration with the environment.
